The resources for this painting were Dutch masters, photos of a nearby forest and my imagination. The Pileated Woodpecker in the tree in the foreground can be somewhat allusive. The hiker in the picture probably did not see the bird but would have heard him. They have a very distinctive bugle. They are the largest woodpecker at about the size of a raven. If you are fortunate enough to spot one you will never forget it.
